Programs:
Summer Reading Program 2019 theme was "A Universe of Stories" -- 90 registered,
4,439 books read, 10 storytime sessions, Pockets Full of Fun puppet show, Starlab
Preschool Storytime -- 25 sessions
Other children's programs -- 1 sessions
Children's movies -- 5 showings
Adult Book Discussion -- 14 meetings (8 months)
Central Lyon Summer Reading Program for students going into 1st through 4th grades
was held in the public library for three weeks in June 2019. 55 children were registered.
Friends of the Library projects included Fall Festival, prizes for 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten, Pockets Full of Fun (SRP), and hosting movie events for children.
IA Shares was a new delivery service to provide a method for sending library materials
between Iowa public libraries at no charge to individual libraries.
Closed 7 weeks from March 18 through May 4 due to state guidelines on COVID-19 pandemic.
During this time the library staff provided ongoing check-out services and worked to upgrade
other library services.
A. Curbside. 1,607 items were checked out and 814 items were renewed during seven weeks.
Patrons could call or email with requests and then pick up items outside with no contact.
B. Books read by authors, actors, and astronauts were posted to Facebook daily to encourage
children and parents in the love of reading and learning through literature. (3-25 to 5-15)
C. Staff moved almost every book in the library to a new location.
Periodicals – reorganized
Adult fiction, mysteries, westerns – moved & evenly respaced
Christian fiction – moved from two sections to one section
Large print fiction – moved from two sections to one section
Adult nonfiction & biographies – respaced to make more room for children’s books
D. Increased space for juvenile books was used for displays such as graphic novels,
board books, series fiction, and series nonfiction.
E. Added new signage for adult and juvenile sections.
F. Started planning a “new kind” of summer reading program called Summer-Reading-
Program-To-Go with packets for children and families to take home every week.
G. Reviewed picture books for replacement, repair, and withdrawal.
H. Sorted donated materials for book sale or library use—DVDs, fiction books, miscellaneous.
I. Weeded books, audiocassettes, and videocassettes.
J. Prepared library building for reopening—removed seating to space 6 feet apart, removed
toys, added sneeze guard at circulation desk, new location for book returns, added
signage.
K. Implemented procedures for cleaning books and other public health measures.
L. Attended ten weekly state-sponsored online classes on Crisis Response for libraries.
M. Followed changing information on COVID-19 and implications for libraries.
